Let’s get some of the hard facts about the tomato out there:
Why is the tomato so good for you?
It contains concentrated amounts of licopene which is so good for the pancreas, liver, kidneys, spleen, adrenal glands, skin, eyes and also fights the onslaught of cancer.
Tomatoes have made front page news over and over again about being a cancer fighting giants.

They are very high in Vitamin C and Vitamin A.
We need Vitamin C to operate almost every function in your body and Vitamin A is such a builder of strength for your entire system.

It really is interesting how the benefits change if the tomato is cooked or if it is raw.
For example, cooked tomatoes have a high amount of oxalic acid, which acidifies the blood which in turn draws minerals from your teeth, bones and your tissues.
So in this way the cooked tomato is NO GOOD for you!
The raw tomato is incredibly alkaline.  So interesting, right?
It actually contributes to the absorption of the calcium and other minerals.

If you don’t already have a juicer I recommend getting the VRT 330 because it works on a slower masticating system.  So the taste will be so rich and real.  You can also store this juice for a couple of days since it is processed so much slower.

How much time do you spend during the day thinking about what you are going to eat?

Wouldn’t it be so great if we could use our thought life, brain power and time to be more introspective?

Of course, initially when you start fasting you will be thinking about food.  You might think, “I wish I could eat and I can’t wait for this day to be over!”
In those moments remind yourself why you are fasting.

I like to set an intention on the days I juice fast.  Just as I do when I am in my yoga practice.  Bring yourself into the moment and really feel the present.
Use it as a way change your normal day-to-day thought life.
Juice fasting will get you thinking differently about your life, your body, about who you are and the relationship you have with food.

Perhaps you could juice fast and dedicate your fast to someone you love or doesn’t have the opportunity to eat anything they want whenever they want..  
Whenever we spend time doing something that is good for our bodies and our souls we grow.  We become stronger more determined, focused people.

We are constantly letting our mind run with what might make us happy instead of finding the stillness to let the answers in.

ImageThis is truly the only place to find your answers.  You might be thinking…what makes me so sure?

I can be sure only from experience.  Self-realization is the road to happiness and the road to self-realization is a series of experiments.
You have to learn what works for you.  But most importantly you have to SEEK.  This means make the time for yourself.

Just like our previous blogs, it might take a little extra time to do what’s right for your body, like juicing daily, or for the earth, the same is true for your soul.
What brings on all this soul food talk? I recently spent 3 beautiful, soul searching weeks at a yoga ashram in Chile.  There the people don’t only feed their souls, they feed their bodies as well. Everything is 100% organic and home grown. I learned so much about how to live eco-friendly from growing your own vegetables to composting and food preparation.

I would love to share those things with you in the next couple weeks in our blog. I hope you will find it helpful and inspiring to find the time to experiment with what feeds your body and soul.

Water, the original good stuff and the topic of our second blog in the Green your juice series, where we like to add some great tips on how you can care for your health and the environment with your juicing habits.

It appears we have unlimited but this is definitely not the case! It is a precious life-giving resource and we as responsible people have to take every caution to reduce not only our carbon footprint but also our water footprint.  You may be thinking I’m drinking juice so I’m saving water ok check…donezo! Not the case, there are some other great ways you can reduce your usage, save money and the planet!

1. Washing your veggies and fruits- This is a huge chunk of the water used for juicing. If you wash each thing individually you could end up wasting gallons of water when you are fasting or juicing regularly.

A simple way to solve this is to either fill the sink or a pan with water to wash everything at once.  We recommend using veggie wash it is a great way to not only conserve water but also makes sure you remove all pesticides and wax from your produce.  There are also two great substitutes for a commercially sold wash.

  1. Baking soda- Simply shake some baking soda in to your soaking water and let sit for 5-10 min.
  2. Vinegar- Either add equal parts water and vinegar to a spray bottle or add to your soaking water.
These are both easy and economical ways to keep water usage down and healthy living up!
If you decide not to use cleaner in your wash-up process or if you are just giving them a second rinse off, consider gathering the water used for cleaning veggies to water house plants.
2. Waste disposal- Another way you can conserve water while juicing is to use the garbage disposal sparingly. Every time you cram-jam-slam those rouges down the drain to avoid putting them in the trash (which is a good thought of course but see our blog on how to make good us

e of your waste) you are running gallons of water down the drain to do so. Composing is a simple and economical way to solve this problem. I know you have been thinking of starting one, make today the day!

3. Clean up- The final way you can save the planet while saving yourself from toxins is during clean up.  It may not be the best part of the juicing process but it can make a huge impact if you do it with care. These are simple and universal tips for saving water while washing dishes.
  1. Don’t doddle!– Make sure you have everything ready and nearby when you are ready to clean out your juicer. Running all over the kitchen with the faucet going is money and a precious resource down the drain.
  2. Be Handy-Don’t be afraid to get your hands in there.  The more you can have clean before heading to the sink the less rinse time you will use before washing or heading to the dishwasher.
  3. Stop the cycle– When washing juicer parts in the dishwasher, use the shortest cycle possible to get the job done to your liking. Always always wash with a full load!
  4. Procrastinate– Depending on your juicer you may not need to clean it after every single use. Especially if you are juicing several times a day.
If you begin to think of water as the precious life-giving resource that it is than conservation becomes easy. Why waste something you don’t have to. Being conscious of your health and the health of the earth are the first steps towards a happy and balanced life.

My little sister has always loved food.  A loving family nick name for her as a child was “wooden leg” because she just kept eating at the dinner table and never seemed to get full.

As an athlete this wasn’t a problem…but what happened when she stopped training like a professional basketball player?

Well…you guessed right!  She gained a lot of unwanted weight.

My sister was ready to have a slim and sexy body.  The question was how could someone who loves food as much as her reach those goals?

She found her answer in the juice.  With my mom as her guide she was able to lose the weight she wanted and now she is in the best shape of her life.

People are always telling me they would love to lose weight but don’t want to give up their favorite things (pizza, wine, chips and salsa, cake frosting).
Those feelings are completely understandable.  My mom has always been all or nothing kind of person.  It doesn’t matter if it is good or bad.
That’s in regards to religion, exercise, nutrition, parenting, reading, whatever she is into that moment.  The thing with this kind of mentality is it will teach you what is healthy or unhealthy for you pretty quickly.
Our bodies are incredibly intelligent and respond to what works and rejects what doesn’t.
For example, if alcohol is bad for you (alcohol destroys/damages your cells, it raises your Acidity level, overall doing nothing positive for your system)  then never drink.

Some people try to live a life of balance.  Eat as good as you can throughout the day then treat yourself to a desert after a hard workout.
A day that may start with a juice or a wheatgrass (strongest cleanser of the liver), get some physical activity during the day then enjoy a nice dinner with a great glass of Pinot Noir.

It is not always what you take out of your diet that will help you look and feel better it is what you add.  Adding a carrot juice to your weekly diet; which is an overall enhancer of so many things – your eyes your skin – and it is a energy due to the natural occurring sugars that are very healthy for you!

The problem with a lot of folks is they have gone so far in the unhealthy direction.  Having a diet that consists of a processed, high sugared foods for breakfast, a sandwich on white bread mayonnaise and meat minus the vegetables for lunch, no physical activity during the day, then a large portioned dinner in front of the TV with a 6 pack of beer.
Can you imagine what that will do to someone’s body.
After years of this sort of behavior you will have to take on my mom’s mentality of all or nothing.  Daily workout routine, always putting the best nutrition into your body and no alcohol.
Every choice good or bad has a consequence and if it took you 5 years to feel crappy and weigh 25 lbs heavier than you should than it is going to take a lot longer than 4 weeks of being healthy to get your body back to normal function.
I am not here to be the barer of bad news I hope to motivate you to change your life today!
If you are an all or nothing type person like my mom, go for it.  I envy your dedication.  If you are more like myself start making small changes every couple of days until a habit is formed.  I’m not saying you will have to give up that pizza and glass of vino for the rest of your life, but who knows you may end up wanting to.  Live the healthy life you want to today and you will feel the benefits tomorrow.
